Hi I have a 1979 Lincoln Versailles with 59000 miles on it. I got it from Lincoln Land last month. It has come down with a bug and im out of ideas. She starts up just fine and would run for about 20 minutes and it would shut down. No amount of cranking would help. Let it sit for about a hour and it start right up as it nothing happenend. As of today it shuts off in about 4minutes. I just keeps getting worse. To date it has a new computer, new ignition module, new battery and a new coil. Nothing makes a abit of difference. I some one out there has had this problem any ideas would abe greatly appreciated. My E- mail is dmannis1955@msn.com Thanks.

Sounds like a form of vapour lock. James or one the Versailles experts should be able to chip in with some ideas.
..........and welcome to the forum.

Hi James R- I have a '79 Versailles also, but with lots more miles. I've had it for just less than 2 yrs. I too have experienced the same symptoms on a few occasions, rather embarassing as you roll up smoothly to a stop light, and then when it's time to go --- nothing. No rough idle, no sputter to warn you. Just dead. Engine will crank but not start. Jeff ,I believe ,is right. It's a fuel delivery problem. I've replaced the fuel filter and gas cap on mine ,and I'd practically bet that the gas cap was the culprit. No problem since. Hope it's that simple for you. It would be great if you could post pictures of your wheels. Enjoy your Versailles, and this forum. Cheers, Ralph

Actually, James contacted me through my website and I suggested it was vapor lock. I've never had this particular problem, but I keep reading stories from those that do. But I knew others on the board here may have had other experiences that could help him. I hope it is something simple like the gas cap or fuel filter.

Thanks to you all for your replys concerning my 79 Versaille shutting down. I have checked for fuel problems including a new fuel filter. I have sprayed starting fluid into the carb immediatley after it quits, and cranked it over, not even a pop, It should try to start on the fluid, also after it quits the timing light will not flash as you crank the engine. It will flash if you hook it up before the engine quits and you just crank it. Something is killing the voltage to the plugs. Ive replaced everything I can think of. Anybody have a clue as to what could be doing this on electric side of the problem?? Thanks to all again. Jim Mannison

Have you replaced the (I think its a regulator) on the RH fender just behind the battery? It's a unit that your battery cable goes on to...
I was remembering that I had this '77 Versailles that starting acting like an electrical misfit. It would shut off with the ignition key and other strange behaviour. I had a shorted wire going to this unit and I soldered it.
Just a thought.

First- Welcome to the forum, we all enjoy reading about fellow members rides, their joy and occasional misery. A true ESS is a limited production unit, don't sell it too cheaply, if its neat, clean, reliable. Maybe you could post pictures, so the rest of us could drool!!! Again, welcome and enjoy. By the way, I think Washington state and Oregon are a small piece of Paradise.. always have enjoyed our visits. Cheers, Ralph
