It seems many 64-73 Mustang owners like to raid Granadas, Monarchs, and Versailles for the rear ends and the front wheel/hub/brake parts to upgrade their cars. This usually results in the destruction of said GMV after it's been cannibalized.
Here's my question:
If Mustang owners can swap GMV bits onto their cars to get upgraded front disc brakes (and rears if they're lucky to find a Versailles for example) then is there any reason why those Mustang brake parts which are getting tossed away couldn't be used on GMV's?
The reason I ask is I've found one of these victims sitting in a field near my house, it's a clean rust-free white on blue 1980 4-door Monarch. It has no rear end, no front spindles or brakes, no brake booster or master cylinder or brake pedal, and the straight six engine and automatic transmission are also missing. The Mustang brake parts (backing plates, drums, shoes, hardware, wheel cylinders, etc) that were cast off are sitting on the front floorboard of the Monarch. It's sitting on blocks on the frame and the leaf springs are just hanging there. I can get the car (and those brake parts and a T5 transmission) for $200 with title and have no idea how to haul it home, but I'm working on that. My goal is to install those Mustang brake parts on the car, drop in a 4-cylinder/5-speed (probably 2.3L/2.5L from a Ranger) and drive it mostly in town.
So what's the verdict, can the older drum brakes work, even if they suck? If not then what about Ranger pickup brakes from an 80s-90s model, because honestly I'm probably at least using Ranger rear brakes (on a 7.5" axle pulled from whatever Ranger I get the engine/trans from) and if the fronts work too then it might even convince me to buy a complete Ranger for parts if I'll be using that much of it.
