Tomorrow is supposed to be a beautiful day so im going to tackel my Tie rod ends and sleeves. I also have the pit man arm bushing and a few other items, looking to maybe tighten up the front end a bit. She feels loose while she drives on the highway. She walks quite a bit while in the lane so im hoping this resolves it a little at least.

While you're down there, knee high to a grasshopper, you might want to check your rag joint, most common cause of GMV wander, if you haven't replaced it already. It's like a 5/16 in thick fiber disc with 4 holes in it, mounts on the steering shaft, and provides the necessary flex for your steering shaft. Good luck. Cheers, Ralph
By the way, they are fairly inexpensive. but getnew bolts & nuts while you're at it, if you need to replace. There should be esssentially zero rotation play in the joint.

Thanks Robic!
The rag joint looks good actually. It's not dry rotted nor are the fibers fraying around the edges. My grandmother has reciepts for its replacement from 1998 so im hoping thats ok. The underworkings of the front end though, they are in rough shape. they all look to be the original pieces!

Good luck! btw what year is the car? If it is equipped with a control valve, the rubber bushings at the frame bracket contribute to steering 'looseness' as they age and harden. Also the valve itself can have play. There may be play with the engine off, and may tighten up when running info

Shes a 1977 4 Door. Her name is The Commander. Reason...
She takes over everything she drives on lol by switching lanes when she wishes and walking in the lane. Im not sure if she has the control valve. I know shes a pretty plane jane car with few frills. Power steering she has but no power locks or windows. Didnt get to do it yet though, the weather here is horrid.

Commander.....thats pretty good, I fully get it.
Yes, there will be a control valve. I'm not saying there will be any problems, but it is an area to be aware of.

Hey- I'm not sure you can use the Commander handle.. It was a proud label of Studebaker and recently has been re-introduced as part of the Jeep line-up. lol. Commando, maybe, buck naked darting all over the place. hee, hee. ;D

Well, if i cannot use the Commander name then second runner up is the Wizard because shes the Dark Jade Metallic both inside and out and it looks to be the color of something maybe the Wizard Of OZ would wear lol. That control valve, where is it connected to or where can i find it on the car?

Control valve- follow the pressure and return lines from your power steering pump to the control valve assembly., situated crossways under the car, in between and slightly behind the two front road wheels. There are bushings where the assembly mounts to the undercarriage, you can check for excessive play.
This system was used extensively by Ford at that time, including Mustangs so suitable rebuilds ,if necessary are there to be had.

Ah yes i seen that this afternoon. I seen it when i was removing the Tie Rod Ends. The rubber bushings on the end looked good and i found a reciept for it too! BTW, i removed the Idler Arm today and that was a bad idea, it had a LARGE amount of play in it and i think thats where the walking is comming from. I went to replace the rubber bushings inside and it didnt go to well. I ended up ordering a new one from Car Quest for $55.00 . Tomorrow will be the last day and i think she will be good to go.
