A friend of mine has an '81 Granada. He says that when he waxes his car's exterior, the paint pigment comes off the car and is visible on the cloth. (He hand waxes the car; no buffer.) Same thing happens on my '82 XR-7 in the engine bay. The paint just comes off when rubbed.
Is there anyway to prevent this or some protectant that may be applied?

The reason for this -- no clearcoat. This is most likely the original acrylic enamel finish. What's coming off is typical oxidation of the enamel, and it's normal for a non-clear coat finish. Keeping it waxed well is probably the best thing one can do to minimize the oxidation.
