Hello, all, my name is Rod and I'm from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. My first car was a 1975 Monarch coupe. It was pretty plain-jane, with the 302 automatic, bucket seats and I absolutely loved it.
I've been looking for a '75 monarch the last few years as I am at last in a financial position whereby I can afford a frivolous hobby. But, alas, I've waited too long and now it is really hard to find what I want.
Tomorrow I am going to look at a 1980 Monarch Ghia coupe. I am almost certain I will buy it. I did a drive by this afternoon and it is near mint, it was brought up from the southern U.S. a few years ago, so no rust, which is a big problem here in our winter climate. It has 83,000 miles, all the chrome is not only there, but shiny. It also has factory air. It is unfortunately the 6 cylander engine. I'm not crazy about the Ghia trim, I really prefer the cleaner look of the base model, but I.m gonna grab it now before it is too late to find a Monarch at all. But it is a daily driver, has passed safety inspection, the only thing missing is the Mercury hood ornament. At some point sombody put a Granada one on it, but that has to be changed.
So, I look forward to owning a Monarch again and participating in this forum.

Welcome Rod,
I too like the cleaner non-Ghia trim look, but with the correct wheels, you still have a very sharp car. The one thing about the '80 model is that it is a little rarer due to lower production numbers; especially being a Monarch.
I did have a NOS '78-80 Monarch hood ornament around but I'm not sure if I sold it or not. I'll check for you. The base is different than a '75-77 and they will not interchange.

That would be great. I checked on e-bay and could only find the 75-77 on there, and almost started bidding as I didn't know there was a difference. Do you have any idea how hard it is to import a car from the U.S.? I checked out the 75 monarch at Dicks Classic cars, the link to which I found on this forum. It is so very close to what I want, but because of a pot charge that I got when I was 17 I can't even cross the border and I don't know how I would get it.

Rod- Your answer may be to have it shipped. An Canadian outfit like Hansen's Forwarding would take care of all the cross border details. You just have to pick it up at their depot (Calgary) or if you wish they'll deliver to your door. Ralph

Importing Cars from the US to Canada monarch76.proboards105.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1175722131From what I read here, it woul;d seem that the bulk of the red tape applies to cars 15 years old or less... so I have some research to do. I have all but decided not to buy the 1980 monarch I saw today. It is in great shape, starts, runs and drives really well, and the owner has all the doccumentation to show the transmission re-built, new rad, new alternator, new water pump and more within the past couple of years. She also has all the origional bill of sale, State of Texas title, owners manual, Ford dealer brochures etc. There is just one body change I can't live with, and that is the loss of the wrap-around signal lights up front. I'm not even sure which year Ford changed that, probably the same year the went to the square headlights, but I need to have a Monarch with the origional 1975 style front sygnal lights. For anyone looking for a great 80 Monarch, though, this one is really worth looking at. Anyway, guys, thanks for your interest and your helpful comments.

Yes - you have to stick to 1975-77 if you want the round headlamps and wraparound parking lights. To me, the '78-80 Granadas and Monarchs are too similiar in design.
If you have the desire for a early Monarch, may I suggest trying to find a 1976-77 Mercury Monarch "S" It's the sport package similiar to the Granada Sports Coupe.

You can certainly suggest it...finding one, however, may be a bit of a struggle. I don't think I have ever seen one, and I have been noticing Granadas and Monarch ever since I bought mine in 1981. Do you have any links to pics of this model?
