Some lives were brief, some a bit longer, and some remarkably well into decades and decades-- but gone are CORD DURANT ESSEX WHIPPET HUPMOBILE REO LASALLE FRAZER KAISER TUCKER PACKARD NASH DESOTO HENRY J MONARCH STUDEBAKER EDSEL PLYMOUTH OLDSMOBILE PONTIAC and others that do not come to mind....
RIP.... but life goes on.
The demise of North American manufacturing has been evident for a few decades; we no longer make Televisions, and other electronics; we hardly make any appliances: shoes, garments, etc... That's history, I guess, But I think we can take a page from the Europeans... sure they import a lot of goods from Asia, but not at the rate that we do...and they've somehow manage to retain a certain amount of "consumer necessities"manufacturing in Europe. Can we hope to exist successfully, singly on "service"industry thru computers, financial management, etc without tangible goods? I think not, and furthermore, we'll be at the mercy of those that do produce those tangible goods, whether it be vehicles, appliances, electronics, furniture, garments, footwear, tools,etc.. Good luck to GM & Chrysler spending our tax dollars re-organizing, let's hope they survive.
