Some time ago either on this forum or the other GMV forum there was discussion about "exploding batteries". As many of you know, I'm an ole fella, been around cars a long time.... never had experienced an exploding battery until two days ago. Spring at long last has reached our area, time to roll out that old iron! I generally take out the batteries from the cars I'm storing, and keep them on a wooden trolley in our unheated garage. Periodically thru the winter, I'll put the 1amp trickle charger to keep up the battery charge (after checking with the volt meter that the battery isn't totally dead). Did that a few times thru the winter with this specific Motorcraft battery, with no incident. On sunday, checked this battery -it read @9 volts- hooked up the trickle charger, and went about other chores in the garage. About two hours later, the battery just blew with a loud explosion and a very acrid smell from the acid. I picked up shards of battery casing throughout the garage ( yes with rubber gloves). A first time experience I hope not to have again. I'm also grateful that I was about 8-9 feet away from it when it exploded, so- no harm to this old carcass except for jolted nerves. I can't quite understand why that would happen- definitely not frozen nor totally discharged. I can only assume a spontaneous internal short.

I've seen one other that went off like this. Scary as heck. Glad you weren't leaning over it, Ralph!

I was only around one that went off but it had a catalyst. We working with a grinder at the vice in front of a car with the hood up. A spark set the battery off.
Glad you're ok Ralph - It's a museum piece
