Hello,
sorry for that "silly" question... it´s my first automatic..
how is the transmission fluid level checked correctly?
in "P" with running machine? is that correct?
and what fluid do i have to use?
i think the level is to low... Jeff said something like that, but i didn´t wand to disturb him all the time :-)
The Merc does funny things.....
When accelerating slowly on 1,2 or D, the merc runs great. But after giving a kick-down, "he" has problems with shifting from 1st in 2nd and then in 3rd. The problem occurs e.g. when starting again (after giving more than 2/3 gas) from the traffic lights slowly. Then the 302 turns up to 3-3500 rpm before he shifts a little hard into 2nd gear (at about 35 mph". I can "work against that", when shifting manually into "2".. then he shifts. It always takes up to 50 mph before he shifts into 3rd
I got the feeling that he always turns to high in "D"
I´ll be glad about every idea!

RE: AUTOMATIC Transmission.
There is only ONE appropriate fluid- "FORD TYPE F"- and it maybe a little hard to find in Europe.
Adding any other type will hurt the transmission.
Check fluid level, car in PARK - engine warm/hot and running.
Fluid should be rose/pink/light red in colour and smell sweet not burnt. Shift points you describe, at 30 mph, and 50 mph , are way too high. Should be around 15 -18 mph and 25-30mph.
You should have reliable "auto transmission"garage check out - before it gets damaged. CAR LOOKS GOOD!!!!! Welcome to the club. RALPH

One inexpensive item to check, replace re: the shifting questions -
Pick up a new vacuum modulator valve for the car and install it. It's at the back of the trans above the edge of the pan, there's a vacuum line running into it. Unscrew the old one, screw in the new one, reattach the vacuum line and drive.
I would think it could account for the odd shifting you're getting.

the promblem escalades. since tomorrow morning the trans doesn´t shift in second at all. funny.. really. I could chuck up! A colleague told me i could use the Liqui Moly ATF III as subsitute for the Type "f" to get the transmission fluid level up. I bought two cans and will check the level later. But THANKS very much for the idea with the vacuum modulator valve I´m goin to get the car to the garage in Olching... they´re specialized on US-Cars I´m really upset, cause i planned to have a little cruise with the family today. F....!!!

RE: AUTOMATIC Transmission. There is only ONE appropriate fluid- "FORD TYPE F"- and it maybe a little hard to find in Europe. If rebuilt the C4 it may sometime handle Dextron III check for a tag under the bonnet/hood and on the gearbox. Some rebuild kits use C5 parts :-) In the UK Mobil sell type F no problem. Morris lubricants (found in GOOD interpendent part stores) sell Liquimatic 33G which is Ford ESW-M2C33-G type G and listed for C4's. A few europen cars use it also early Toyotas

brown fluid = burnt clutches drop the pan pull the filter take a look . also from your original discription your kick down lever may be in need of ajustment.
