As some of you now know, I'm in the process of getting all the parts in order to completely overhauling my 76' Granada suspension. Not to mention add a thing or two in the process to lower it and make her handle a bit better. I've been thinking about getting new ball joints and tie rods since I had a lot of road wander last summer and fall. Can I use 1970-1973 Mustang ball joints (since they do indeed share the same control arms) or must I get the ones that are specific to the species? What else can contribute to road wander?

Are you sure your road wander is not in the steering gear? or rag joint?
My '76 seems to have play more in steering that in suspension. The best way to really check looseness of ball joints is to jack the each side of the front suspension with a bottle jack until the wheel is about 3 inches off the ground. Then use a bar to bar up on the wheel If your ball joints are truly bad, you should be able to feel some play there.

When I rebuilt mine I was told that 73 Mustang frontend and all 72-77 Maverick shared the same as GMV. On another note.....Global West sells tubular upper and lower contraol arms that are for the GMV and would be a HUGE upgrade if you are willing to spend the money. I am going to lower mine with a new set of custom coil springs but I left the rest of the front end factory except for poly bushings, KYB gas shocks and a rear sway bar from P-S-T . BTW I bought a set of long tube Hedman Headers for a 302 auto Maverick. They work fine just be sure to get the bracket to lower the control vlave. James

Thanks guys for the help! I'll look into adjusting the steering gear when the weather permits and then I should be able to locate the steering box on the car. What should I need to do to inspect/replace the rag joint?
