Skills of various primary care staff have been working on the website for nearly two years. Friction between junior digital natives and senior colleagues initially made it difficult for employees to acquire the skills they needed and slowed the progress of digital transformation. When junior employees benefit more from the transformation than senior employees, there can be backlash, especially among senior employees who feel their status has been compromised. But where leaders systematically focus on existing workplace hierarchies during skills transformation, employees are more successful at learning digital, critical thinking and communication skills. Our new research finds that business leaders engaging in reskilling need to be mindful of workplace hierarchies during three types of reskilling upskilling.
Reskilling and reskilling. That's it. Skill improvement. Upskilling programs are targeted at employees who need additional technical training to stay relevant and continue to create value. Leaders can provide personalized learning for these employees by providing peer training on new technologies and relevant workflows. Often, these employees have grown up using digital technologies and are at the lower end of the organizational hierarchy which can ultimately lead to senior employees feeling slighted.
