VIN tag is a hot topic with vintage Mustang people, wondering what GMV people have to add? In 1968 (the 68 model year) it became required that the VIN be displayed in the windshield. The 68 Mustang has the VIN tag riveted to the structure below the windshield (lower right) and the dash pad is notched around and under the tag so it shows.
My 70 Torino and 76 Granada each have the VIN tag riveted to the plate attached to the dash pad. NOT attached to the car structure.
On these cars the VIN is also stamped on the fender aprons, and is shown also on the warrenty sticker on the drivers door.
With Mustangs frequent massive restoration and high value models like Shelby, Boss etc. makes VIN critical.
Many of us GMV people have replaced the padded dash, know that the door sticker isn't official and in any case have replaced the drivers door!
I wonder if many of us really care or worry about the VIN on our GMV?

Tom,
I don't think the VIN is as crucial to GMV owners as it would be to classic Mustang owners. One has to ask, how much of a deal is it to have a factory 351W Granada or Monarch (noted by the H in the VIN)? Except for Ghia models between '75-77, there is no difference in body codes in the VIN. It seems that the most crucial think is the trim code level to prove or deny Sports Coupe / Monarch S status (seeing as not every ESS has P-Code interiors). Therefore, it is probably the build sheet in conjunction with the VIN that would be important for these owners.
Just my 2 cents.

I am considering the purchase of a 1976 Granada Ghia with the 351 windsor engine. Is there a way to tell if this car is original and came with the 351? The car also has PS, PB, and A/C. Thanks, Grant.

If it's truly a 351W car, the 5th digit of the VIN will be an "H"
H=351W F=302 L=250 T=200

Looking for some help from the GMV owners in Ontario, Canada. I recently purchased a '79 Versailles through kijiji, sight unseen until it was delivered by the seller. All seemed fine until I noticed, a few days later, that the VIN tag was missing from the dash. The VIN on the ownership matches a '79 listed in the registry, and it seems to check out (looks like the same car). Is the missing VIN tag an issue? If it is, can they be replaced?
Thanks for your advice in advance!

Well, I'm not in Ontario, but in Canada- in New Brunswick- and I have a 1979 Versailles. At that time the VIN plate was attached to the the dash pad panel and not the car structure. People replace deteriorated dash pads ,and so it goes. I've done it- in fact I believe I've provided Jeff Roblin, the moderator, with VIN numbers from a dash pad I had purchased. I presume the "data plate"on the front door matches the Serial # on your paper work. You might also find the VIN number stamped on the cowl or fender mounting edge. I wouldn't be overly concerned, very few Versailles are ever stolen.and the policing/licensing authorities usually only look at the paperwork. Have you registered /licensed it in your name yet?
Cheers, ralph

Hello ! I have a question on vin's - does the vin # tell you what options are in the car ? Allan Alberta Canada Some, but not much. Engine and body style. Here is how the VIN generically decodes: Sample VIN: 7W82F123456 First character: Model year (7=1977) Second character: Assembly plant (W= Wayne, E = Mahwah) Third/fourth characters: Body style (82= Granada 2dr sedan) Fifth character: Engine (F=302) Characters 6-10: Sequential production number. In the example VIN, 123456 = the 23,456th Granada scheduled for production at the Wayne assembly plant. Job 1 would theoretically be 100001.

The only possible issue I can think of is when you go to get the car certified, or for a safety inspection. The inspecting technician might not like it. I wouldnt care, but some might.
