I recently parted out a 1977 Granada that was too far gone to save but I discovered a potential problem I thought I would share with this group. When I peeled back the vinyl top material I was shocked to find that the roof had rusted away in many areas. The upper corner of the windshield was held together by the windshield glue. My guess is that water was able to wick under the vinyl where it was tucked under the trim. The vinyl has a soft fuzzy back that holds moisture against the roof. I'm the webmaster for our car club and photos of the damage can be found at this website link. www.oldcarclub.com/All%20about%20Cars.htmI would encourage anyone with a vinyl top on their classic car to evaluate their vehicle for this damage.

Very true indeed. I've had that work done on my '76 this year. I was getting a water leak from the windshield and knew the the tray was finally rotted through (I had some bubbling under the vinyl top at the windshield too). Anyways, it was about a $3,000 job to remove the vinyl and glass, do the metal work and replace the glass (new windshield) and replace the vinyl top. That excludes the cost of vinyl as I had a roll of it myself.

yes, it's very common. Dennis @ the Yahoo group had a '78 ESS that was apparently a decent car except that the roof was gone due to the rot under the vinyl. I have had the vinyl replaced on my '77 and the roof showed some damage, but wasn't terminal.

When I purchased vinyl top material for my '76 Monarch, the first thing I had in my possession was the 1976 Mercury Upolstery (spelling?) book which included actual samples of all the interior materials and roof materials. Without it, you are fighting blind. They come up on ebay all the time but no one buys them.
Anyways, I took the book to a professional auto interior restoration shop and told them I wanted enough of that material for the roof and to order in a swatch..........and if it was a match in colour and texture to my book, I'd take it.
I think I spent $600USD on the material and still have some left. This was back in 2000. I didn't have the roof done until last year....but having the material was the most important step.

I've used SMS Fabrics for two of my cars. They have NOS vinyl in factory original colors. They will cut and sew to shape matching original specs. They did excellent work on mine. www.smsautofabrics.com/

I had the half vinyl roof on my Granada Ghia redone three years ago by an older chap who was most proficient at this trade when vinyl roof were so popular- he now runs an independent glass shop but still does a bit of upholstery. I selected from a supplier's sample catalog a near identical "white" yardage, if I recall the pattern was Levant.; when it arrived it was an icier white than the sample, b ut it looks fine . As I recall it was about $115 per yard- done with 2 yds. Labor, sewing, adhesive, instalation, including rear window glass removal & re-install was about $300. Think it pays to enlist an old master for this task. Cheers, Ralph [img src="[/img] i178.photobucket.com/albums/w276/robic58/VinylRoof-Granada2004.jpg"]
